The inscription might be to Grace Butcher, a poet in da levy's circle. The cover drawing was done by Grady Jones and the introductory essay by John Cornillion. The first poem, entitled "Peaces" is a loose listing of permutations of its title, e.g., peA ces, peces pe Aces, Pea c ess, PEA cess, peees ssess, etc. The ink drawing depicts a large calligraphic marking; three other markings, reproduced in mimeographed printing, are scattered throughout this book. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents The cover photograph was taken by Max Roach. At the time of this poem, Julie was Julie Weisberg, a 15 year old Clevelnd Heights acquaintance of d.a. levy.The following is an excerpt from Cleveland Magazine.com in November 2007 about JUlie Weisberg: "Authorities never said exactly which literature prompted levy and Lowell's indictments. But police arrested levy again in late March, confiscated his mimeograph and charged him with five counts of tending to contribute to the delinquency of minors. The charges could have sent levy to prison for up to five years. He was indicted for publishing the 17-year-old Friedman's "Black Revolt" in his anthology "465"; giving a copy of the book to Julie Weisberg, a 15-year-old Cleveland Heights girl; and reading the poem to a Gate audience that included the two teens. This is the second printing by d.a. levy's press; the first printing had the imprint, The Free Lance Poets & Prose Workshop. The Renegade Press edition includes an abstract print and the cover that was made by levy. Billera had a Cleveland radio program on WCLV and editied "Podium" in the mid-1960's. Billera committed suicide in 1981 in his sealed automobile with the motor running from carbon monoxide poisoning. In a reprinted mimeographed letter from levy to neal emerson, editor of Love, levy writes: "...- just sent you 2lbs of poetry mags etc & wish you luck - i cant take it here much longer & hope ill be leaving the city in one way or another very soon - i just wan to let you know that when you get busted for trying to communicate, when you get busted for trying to love... some catholic is going to get a nice paying promotion into the city hierarchy - so your blood wasnt a complete waste - yrs in the slow death d.a. levy.Some of these poems were published previously, e.g., red lady, the madiason envelope, etc.According to a letter from Alan Horvath, the publisher of this book, most copies including the Sackner copy were printed with a blue flip cover with a red image.
